I just installed a 24x lite-on burner in my girlfriend's PC, it's a duron 750 with XP on it. Now she gets sudden restarts, and she can't, for instance, install a game (diablo) anymore. restarts during installation. event log shows errors similar to this

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

After looking it up it people recommend updating the BIOS and/or changing computer from acpi to Standard PC or whatever in device manager. I don't want to do anything this drastic if i don't have to... anyone have any suggestions? firmware on the cd-r is latest fwiw.

TIA

 Well Lite-On are one of the best and most popular CDRW drive manus, known to be very unproblematic. I suggest you try the drive in a diff IDE lead, maybe even swpa Master/Slave. Generally CDRW like to be the Master on the Secondary IDE channel and should have DMA mode enabled. It could be a faulty drive or else perhaps your PSU is having trouble, try the above and the drive in another PC if poss.

This sounds like an undersized power supply or just one going bad. Try running the computer without the burner on.
