Oh, it can, via the method Jeff7 suggested, it's just an outlandishly ridiculous idea that no sane person would undertake unless it was just a proof-of-concept/hobby sort of thing.

As I said, it is technically possible-- but for the OP I just don't think it is within that realm of possibility. The OP obviously has no knowledge of how such things work, and I just don't see a CD headunit manufacturer giving him all the help he would need to accomplish this-- even if he offered to pay them $1000.

Its not stupidity, its about preserving the stock looks, for some thats important
for some its not.

Either way, it would require reverse-engineering the entire headunit / processor for things like displaying Title Tracks, being able to switch to the MP3 cd mode on the fly, etc.. chances are no manufacturer would give you the information you need. So either go get a degree in EE or expect to pay someone a ridiculous amount of money in an ATTEMPT to do so.

Look-- I'm with you on that one.

The only reason I haven't replaced my car's headunit is because it seems like most aftermarket headunits look like white trash mini-boomboxes with all sorts of gaudy buttons and displays.

I just don't believe that you found someone to send your headunit to that:
A) can do it, and
B) is willing to do it.

finally someone gets the point and doesnt call me a douch bag!
is being sent to India, I hahve a friend who has a degree from IIT (indian institue of technology) he says he thinks he can do it for me, and will give it a try. He said he may have to make a new circuitboard. Possibly all new internals and just use the old case

That isn't making a CD player into an MP3 player that is using the empty shell of a CD player to house a completely different set of electronics.

If you had explained that keeping the shell was all you wanted, at least some of us would have treated this as a serious question.

No kidding, that's an entirely different problem than getting the existing hardware to play MP3s. Frankly, though, I think just adding a line-in jack, and plugging a real MP3 player into that, is the best way.

I know its not as cheap as an mp3 player. I am trying to expand the capabilities of the old system. Anyone know if this is possible?
thanks

Yes, what you are looking to do is pretty simple and has been done countless times by others.

All you pretty much need to do is take out your exisisting cd player in your car, and replace it with a cd player capable of reading mp3 files.

Nice and easy....

lmao

I think it would be easier to crack it open and solder some type of line in into the internals then connect an iPod.

I've got an old Pioneer head unit and was able to buy a cable that is basically a 6 disc changer cable with RCA L and R plugs on the end instead of a CD changer. RCA to mini jack and my iPod plugs right in, no having to worry about ****** FM transmitters.

Chances are your car would support a CD changer as well and has a port on the back for that connection. Check it out!
