Cd player to mp3 player

I have a cd player in my car, I was wondering if it is possible to convert it to read mp3 files.
I know its not as cheap as an mp3 player. I am trying to expand the capabilities of the old system. Anyone know if this is possible?
thanks

Yes, what you are looking to do is pretty simple and has been done countless times by others.

All you pretty much need to do is take out your exisisting cd player in your car, and replace it with a cd player capable of reading mp3 files.

Nice and easy....

yes
i know about mp3 capable headunits
thats not what my question was
thats the easy way
Anyone with any info n this
or knkow someone who has done this
pls resond to the thread
thanks

all joking aside, it's not possible.

Well, technically anything is possible... but in reality, what you are asking for is not possible.

So you're basically talking about retrofitting your existing head unit with mp3 capabilities?
I'm sure if you were willing to spend far more time, money, and effort than is logically justifiable, you could do it.

You could, but with the money you'd be spending, you could easily afford the most expensive car audioset 3 to 4 times. It's not profitable.

It's not possible, what part of that do you not understand? They don't just make add-on MP3 circuit chips, which would have to be custom made for every single electronics manufacturer. Jesus christ......

I've got a 5400RPM hard drive. Anyone know how to convert it to 10,000RPM? Huh? Huh? Huh? bump bump bump bump

you have got to take out the current motor and replace it with a 6 speed viper motor

I modded my cell phone to play DVDs. I have to change the batteries halfway through the movie though.

You need a CD adapter though. It's basically like a cassette adapter but shaped like a CD. They sell them everywhere.

(Caption: A PET SHOP SOMEWHERE NEAR MELTON MOWBRAY)

Man: Good morning, I'd like to buy a cat.

Shopkeeper: Certainly sir. I've got a lovely terrier. (indicates a box on the counter)

Man: no, I want a cat really.

Shopkeeper: (taking box off counter and then putting it back on counter as if it is a different box) Oh yeah, how about that?

Man: (looking in box) No, that's the terrier.

Shopkeeper: Well, it's as near as dammit.

Man: Well what do you mean? I want a cat.

Shopkeeper: Listen, tell you what. I'll file its legs down a bit, take its snout out, stick a few wires through its cheeks. There you are, a lovely pussy cat.

Man: Its not a proper cat.

Shopkeeper: What do you mean?

Man: Well it wouldn't meow.

Shopkeeper: Well it would howl a bit.

Man: No, no, no, no. Er, have you got a parrot?

Shopkeeper: No, It's afraid not actually guv, we're fresh out of parrots. I'll tell you what though ... I'll lop its back legs off, make good, strip the fur, stick a couple of wings on and staple on a beak of your own choice. (taking small box and rattling it) No problem. Lovely parrot.

Man: how long would that take?

Shopkeeper: Oh, let me see ... er, stripping the fur off, no legs ... (calling) Harry ... can you do a parrot job on this terrier straight away?

Harry (off screen): No, I'm still putting a tuck in the Airedale, and then I got the frogs to let out.

Shopkeeper: Friday?

Man: No I need it for tomorrow. It's a present.

Shopkeeper: Oh dear, it's a long job. You see parrot conversion ... Tell you what though, for free, terriers make lovely fish. I mean I could do that for you straight away. Legs off, fins on, stick a little pipe through the back of its neck so it can breathe, bit of gold paint, make good ...

Man: You'd need a very big tank.

Shopkeeper: It's a great conversation piece.

Man: Yes, all right, all right ... but, er, only if I can watch.

Yes. Contact the company that made the original unit, get technical schematics for the circuitboard. Then look for an existing MP3 decoder chip, maybe something from Conexant or Philips, I don't really know, and then engineer a circuitboard to interface with the existing unit, get it manufactured, and integrate it into the CD player. Cost: Few hundred dollars. Time spent: Many months or probably years, learning the software, and learning how to integrate the MP3 decoder into circuitry not designed for it.
Other than that, no, there really is no practical way to do it.
Sell the existing unit on eBay, and buy a CD-MP3 player.

CD audio data and MP3 audio data are two very different things. One is WAV format, totally uncompressed. MP3 is heavily compressed and requires a separate chip to decode the data. A regular CD player would just see jibberish.

Thanks for the witty dumb stupid comments. It is possible. As mentioned by jeff 7 it involves a good deal of work.
I have sent in my extra headunit to get done. Ill keep you folks posted

Yeah. Be sure to post back when you get your old headunit back and your wallet is $800 lighter.

wow, this has to be one of the dumbest things i have ever seen...

why not just go buy one like everyone else said? you could have had it today but no, you had to send it to the company so they can modify it? i hope they are doing for free, otherwise you just wasted a lot of time and money.

This thread has to be a joke right??? We're talking taking a regular cd player and make it so it will read mp3's as well. It cannot be done. No way. No how.
