whenever i play a cd (or dvd for that matter) on my pc the sound of the spinning disk is annoying loud. it used to be that i could connect the cd audio cable from the cd/dvd player to my sound card and play back directly from the drive, the disk didn't have to spin as fast and so it was quiet. i THINK the problem is that i'm playing the audio through the motherboard, thus the cd has to spin as fast as at data cd would. this seems to be confirmed by attempting to mute the sound in the creative surround mixer panel - muting the cd audio or digital cd inputs does nothing but muting the wave sound mutes the music.

now, what i can't figure out is how to get the music to play through the little cable (from cd/dvd drive direct to audigy). i have tried both the analog and digital cables, and tried checking and unchecking the "enable digital cd audio" box on the drive properties, nothing makes any difference. the sound is always being played on the wav input, not the cd audio or digital cd. wtf? how can i make this work?

thanks in advance,

joe

Unfortunately, regardless of the OS setting, the bus method (DVD standard) has become the default of many players with no provision for the preferred direct digital cable method. I know Winamp 2 works.

Other than using a diff'rent player that does work with the direct cable method (or in any case) you could use a CD speed limiter utility which some manufacturers offer or alternatively Nero DriveSpeed.

Also FYI, noise levels vary widely. HLG and Samsung are notable for being relatively quiet. Some have reduced default reading speeds which are only bypassed by holding the eject button to close the tray.

You will know it works when, as you say, the mixer source will be one of the CD ones rather than Wave.
