CD music but not other sounds?

My A7N8X dx is playing CDs just fine, but no other sounds come from the speakers. Obviously something simple is turned off somehwere - what is it?

azkiwi have you checked your sound settings in control panel? Maybe something is set to mute. The first place I'd start at least. What other sounds are playing? Things like Windows startup, etc.?

<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e8e8dd">I have checked all that - including the nForce control panel - nothing is muted, all the levels are up etc. No sounds (startup, mail alert etc, wav files) play - just CD music - which sounds great...</FONT>
