CD KEY for Windows ME does not work...

I just replaced a motherboard in a Compaq computer that is running Windows ME. The certificate of authenticity is right on the case. The Recovery CD that came with the computer gives me an error message telling me to call Compaq. I assume this is due to either the new mobo or the fact that I removed the partitions from the harddrive. Compaq wants more $$$ to send me new disks and this will take time. I have a WIndows ME upgrade CD but the key from the certificate of authenticity does not work when I try to install. I assume that the keys for the upgrade version are different than the keys for the full version. Is this the case? If someone can help me out here I would appreciate it. By the way, my private messaging is turned on...

Thanks.
