I got a pack of CD jewel cases. Would there be any problem with using them for DVDs?

Why are there jewel cases for CDs and then jewel cases for DVDs if the dimensions are the same?

They only make two types so they can charge a higher price for the DVD version ... it is basically the same case
if you looking at a normal size cd jewel case .. in some cases, the hub in the case for a dvd may be a bit easier
to use ... dvd centers are a bit more fragile than cd's .... of course, you can also buy the real DVD cases at
places like Staples or Compusa ... same ones as a store bought dvd would be in .. then you can use Avery
or similar to print a real looking case label

No, it is not.
I don't want to damage my DVDs.

I don't know if DVDs and CDs have the exact same dimensions (physically). The fact that I can buy jewel cases from a store for CDs and I also can buy jewel cases for DVDs (as they are marked that way), makes me wonder if they do have different dimensions (even if slightly different).

That is why I asked.

I use regular $0.14 CD jewel cases and they work just fine. I have a case of 200 of them at work for just this purpose.

EDIT - just read the second half of your question... they have DVD jewel cases so they can charge more for the same plastic. :)

No physical difference on the disk storage area. But, another reason for the larger DVD case is so that the same graphics used for VHS tapes can be used for DVDs. It is also easier to see them on your bookshelf - movie collectors got used to that with VHS tapes. DVD movies are more intended for the home entertainment system market than the computer user.

The DVD center hole hub is supposedly more fragile than a CD's, so there is allegedly more chance that a CD jewel cases' "grippy fingers" will crack the DVD. Or so they say.

Anyone selling you DVD jewel cases that look like CD cases, for more money, is ripping you off on the assumption that you don't know any better. Well, not ripping you off. Just profiting on your ignorance. Same hub size, same outer size. DVDs can be heavier (and maybe slight thicker), but same otherwise.

Go for the CD cases. I do. (I also have a stock of standard 1, 2, and 3 disc jacket style DVD cases for production.)
