Something has happened that my lite-On CD/DVD (Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S) is not working. When I check in system Hardware, it has an exclamation point over the drive and this message:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

I have uninstalled the driver, restarted the computer to re-recognize the hardware, but continues to show this as being corrupted. "My Computer" does not show this device as being connected. What can I do?

The only recent thing that I have done is remove Itunes and the software related to this, but can't remember if I have used the player since then (did this last night). Did this perhaps remove a necessary file?

Thanks in advance!

also try this - that there are 2 reg keys that screw the device, I removed them both and re-scaned for PnP (or rebooted) after removing the device & all was well. The keys are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters".

looks like when you uninstalled itunes it corrupted something

I just found this out and deleted both entries; works great now!!! Thanks everyone, as always, a great group to work with!

If you have another Drive, remove the lite-on and replace with a different one. I have had a lite-on drive crap out on me a couple of times and I never purchased one again. It just might very well be that it did just die on you. The Os shouldn't have that much trouble loading a dvd drive.

If bios reconizes it and the OS can not load the driver is a good indication of a troubled drive. Just recently, I had a drive fail and made my bootup take forever. Had to remove all but the essentials to find the culprit.
