Hey guys, I'm using a Samsung Super Writermaster SSH-S223F DVD writer and just recently it stopped reading discs/showing up in my computer.
In device manager, it shows that the drivers are not functioning properly and/or not up do date. My instantaneous idea was to go to the Samsung website and try to find the drivers. After searching for a while all I could find was the firmware, which after installing didn't work. I don't know what to do other than reinstall Windows, which is a huge hassle and will not guarantee any fix. What do you guys think?
Thanks for your time

Delete the DvD/CD from Device Manager, reboot & let windows re-detect the hardware & see what happens.

I don't know what OS you're using but if it's XP, Vista or win 7 the drivers are already there.
There hasn't been a need to add drivers for CD DVD players in quite awhile

Whenever I had a DVD-RW, CD-RW drive just stop working it just meant that the drive is hosed. They build them so cheaply now that most of them are crap. My Lite-on DVD writer just stopped reading DVDs just last week. Works reading CDs but not DVDs. Laser for the DVD wavelength probably croaked on mine.

I would try the drive on another system if you have a spare computer just to confirm. Or do you have a spare DVD, CD drive to put in this system?

Or, just uninstall the drive from your control panel, shut the computer down, plug the SATA connection into another SATA port on the motherboard. Probably an exercise in futility but it won't take much time. See if the OS sees the drive and possibly works.

Reinstalling the OS is not going to be necessary.
