I'm using XP. I archive job files onto CDs and DVDs, and have literally hundreds of disks that have to be cataloged. I currently use an old file cataloging program that is no longer being maintained or updated (the company has disappeared), and I'd like to find a better, faster program.
Ideally, I'd like to find a program with a really good search capability, similar to XP's -- the ability to search for a filename by typing in a just a few characters, without bothering with wildcard characters (such as asterisks).
And the ability to print out a CD cover/insert with a list of filenames would be a plus.
It does NOT need to be freeware. I'd be happy to pay for a program that's supported and occasionally updated.
I know there are dozens, if not hundreds, of such programs. But I know from experience that downloading, installing, and trying out demo versions could take weeks, and I was hoping for specific suggestions so I could at least narrow down the list of programs I want to try.
And if anyone knows if it's possible to convert my current file catalog database (it's a .cdt file, whatever that is) to something a new program might read, I'd love to know about it. Or do all of these programs have proprietary database formats that can't be converted?
Thanks for any suggestions.
