CD/DVD disk imaging...Best way to go?

Okay, to the best of my knowledge there's 3 ways you can go (as far as putting an image onto a CD/DVD).

Labels
Printed from an Inkjet or Laser, then applied either by hand (peel and stick) or using some kind of applicator that makes applying the label to the CD/DVD easier.
Requires: Blank Labels, Applicator, Printer
Cons: Tricky to get the label onto to the CD/DVD? Label could peel off over time?

Inkjet print DIRECTLY onto CD/DVD
Certain inkjet printers are capable (out-of-the-box) of printing on CD/DVDs.
Requires: Inkjet ready CD/DVDs, Printer (or a special printer adapter that allows printing to CD/DVD)
Cons: Can ONLY print on inkjet ready CD/DVDs. A little moisture and it smears?

Thermal ribbon printer
Compact printers that use single-color ribbon to thermally apply the Font/pictures onto the CD/DVD
Requires: Thermal Printer, Ribbons (supposely each ribbon can handle up to 50 CD/DVDs)
Cons: Looks better than handwriting with perm-marker, but not as nice as printed. Need a shiny, FLAT surface for best result.

I've only printed what I know or have heard. What are your experiences and recommendations?

Thanks.

There is a new way coming out. It's sorta of a variation of the method that Yamaha ( i think) used. It uses the laser to burn a picture onto the other side of the DVD. You need specific DVD and a DVD burner which supports the spec but the premium on the discs should be less than 10 cents. It's the most practical for those who don't want to get all involved with applying labels or printing and are just looking for a quick way to identify a disk. I'm sure someone can point to a link.

Under the label category, I got a "Stomp" kit from Staples a while ago for $7 (clearance), and the labels haven't peeled off in the last year -- they're also very easy to attach.

Entity,

1. Are CD/DVD labels standard size, so you don't have to worry about getting special labels for special applicators?
2. That's great that the labels have stayed on, but how much use did those discs go through? For instance, I recently burned a Spongebob compilation for friend of mine's son...You KNOW that thing is going to be used on a DAILY basis. Would there be concern about using labels for a situation like this?
3. How do you print the labels (inkjet or Laser)? And have you been pleased with your results, especially over time?
4. How does a lable look on a disc? Cheesy, decent, pretty good...What your opinion?

Thanks!

i use the stomp kits.. works fine..

the biggest thing.. getting the software to print correctly on to the circle..many times it screws up (nero and ezcd creator all have the feature to do this built in), but somehow i think avery screws up once in a while)

1. Yes, they are standard size; you can get other sizes (they give you a pack of minis for mini-CDs as well) that work just fine with the applicator, but both DVDs and CDs will use the same size.
2. They certainly haven't gone through as much use as a kid would put a Spongebob DVD, but they've gone through enough that I feel they're fairly well tested. I can't peel the label off, even if I try.
3. Labels can be printed through any printer (well, I dunno about dot matrix, but 🙂). I'm very pleased with the results.

Ahhh, that's another question...For printing and labeling, what software do you all use?

I used the software they gave me -- I forget what it was called. Included in the package, though.
