CD drives not working

I have no idea what the heck is going on with my machine. I tried burning a disk in my HP 9900ci, which has been working fine. I was burning MP3's to an audio CD using Nero 5. Got an error with one the foramts of one of the songs and it killed the disk. This is the first coaster this drive has ever made. Tried burning 3 tracks to disk to see if the problem was actually with that song or the hardware. Burn went fine according to Nero, but the disk was not recognized when I put it back in the burner to play the audio. Stuck the disk in my CD ROM drive (50x generic), it wasn't recognized by that either.

Put a DVD in the HP CDRW/DVD it did not recognize that I had put in a disk. Tried putting my Office 2k disk in the 50x - Nothing!!

The 50x is the Slave on my primary IDE with my HDD. The CDRW is the only drive and master and the secondary IDE.

This is all on a Win2K box that has been working fine for months.

Thanks for the help and for reading this far.

Hello!
Did u try using the HP's utility -> Diagnose ? .U may find some hints over there .Now if u put a cd in the cdrom drive , do the drive continously blink the right LED(my HP8200 has 2 LED's),if it blinks's i.e then it cannot read the cd. If so i had a similar problem and by using the above named utility , the drive become normal. So conduct some test on your ROM .
