I just reformatted and reinstalled Win XP Pro for a friend on a computer with an ASUS A7V266E motherboard with a VIA KT266A chip set.
It has a CD drive and a CDRW. They were working fine while I was installing all of the software. The last software I installed before the problem was Nero 5.0. When I set the computer up on site and tried to install printer software it would not read the disk in the drive.
The drives are listed in the hardware list but neither one would recocognize any of the disks I tried. I uninstalled Nero and that did not make a difference.
If I put a disk in the drive first and then rebooted, it would read the disk that first time after re-boot. After I removed that disk from the drive it would no longer recognize any new disks until I rebooted again with the disk in the drive. If it did not have a disk in the drive when rebooting, it would not recognize any disk I inserted after the restart.
At first I thought both drives had gone bad at the same time but new that was not likely. That is when I found out it would read a disk after a reboot.
I'm hoping someone will know the answer so I won't spend hours trying one thing after another.
