Trying to rebuild a Compaq Presario 5528 for a friend....but the Win98 boot disk can't see the CD-ROM. All the parts are OEM.

I was able to load Caldera Open Linux just fine, it booted from the floppy and found the CD ok. (No, I can't leave Linux on for this particular user. :() Compaq's site doesn't have any CD drivers listed for downloads.

Isn't that what's on the Win98 boot diskette? I see it loads ASPI drivers as well, but I thought it tried the ATAPI first.

If that computer originally came with Win98 on it and the cdrom drive is hooked up directly to the ide controller and not to some special controller card then there will not be a driver for it.

Win98 has its own built in drivers.

However the Win98 startup disk should still load a driver for it. Watch the process of the startup disk. It will state which drive the cdrom driver was loaded for.

If that Compaq hard drive hasnt been fdisked yet then your cdrom should be drive: D, E or F
I cant remember if the virtual ram drive is loaded before or after the cdrom drive.

THANK YOU Bacillus!!

I don't normally care for things that can cause anthrax, but Bacillus saved the day. It took me a while to find that CDGOD 5.5 (beta) is out, but that it won't run under W2K.

Machine booted up, I picked a Compaq driver first (guessing) and it found the CD perfectly. Win98 is being installed now. :D
