CD drive won't see disk

I have a very weird intermittent problem...the CD drive will not see a CD in it.

If you go to device manager and click on teh CD, click around a few settings then close it - it works....a few hours later it stops again.

This is not hardware as its happening on a number of machines usin the same HDD image....anyone any clue whats going on?
