Sounds like its connected properly - problem would be either with the laser or some kind of driver malfunction. Try same cables, driver and CD with a different drive and then you will know!

Old! about a six year old gateway. i have a feeling it is the drive gone bad. i will swap out the drive with one that works and i have a feeling it will read fine.
i just thought this message might be a common problem with an obvious fix.
Hi, Try removing it in SYSTEM MANAGER and reboot. If it still doesn't go then the drive is bad. Failure to read the cd and log it in is the same as no disk in the drive.
I know this seems unlikely, but I had similar issues with my laptop at work. Apparently some of the DRM installed with a Sony CD (Kasabian, to be exact) was causing read issues with a bunch of my CD's.
I went to Sony BMG's website and followed the links for the class action lawsuit page to uninstall the DRM software, rebooted, and it started playing my other discs with no issues.
