CD Drive not being recognized

For some reason my CD drive isn't showing up under my computer, its not being recognized at all, I recently put in a new hard drive and went to run the installation CD and when I went under my computer to click the CD-Rom drive it wasn't there.

Any ideas what could be the problem? I check all connections with cables and such and its a no go.

Is it on the same ide channel as the new drive? Jumper settings?

you're going to have to exscuse my ignorance, I have no idea what you are talking about.

On the back of the CD drive (where the power & data cables connections are), there are a series of jumpers. There should be a label on the back or top, which tells how to set the drive for master, slave, or cable select. If you have a hard drive on the same channel (cable), it will also have to be jumpered to collaborate with the CD-ROM. If one is set to master, the other must be set to slave, or vice versa. The other option is to set both to "cable select".

EDIT: Scan down mechbgon's guide to see a pciture with the jumpers (albeit it is on a hard drive, it is still pretty much the same thing).

Well this is what I am wondering, I have one hard drive in there, I installed another HD, the CD-Rom was already in there so all I really did was install another HD, but for some reason my CD-Rom doesn't seem to be working now and its not picking up the new HD.

How are they configured? What devices do you have on what channel / cable? And what are the hard drives / optical drive set to, in regards to jumpers (either master, slave, or CS)? Are the hard drives SATA or IDE?

The original drive is the master, the drive I just installed is the slave the drive I just installed is an ATA drive, if you want more in dept details I am doing upgrades on an E-machines T3522 I know it might be pointless but I was giving it a shot.

So the hard drives are on the same cable, and the optical drive is by itself, and it stopped being detected? What does it show in your BIOS (is it recognized there). Make sure the secondary channel isn't disabled...

How do I get into my BIOS to check that? Yes the two HD's are on the same cable and the optical is by itself

When you reboot your computer, there should be a line of text that says somethiung to the effect of "Hit F1 to enter setup". It is usually F1, F2, F10, F12, or delete. It differs for each BIOS, but for the most part, it will be one of those buttons.

The IDE / SATA channel information is usually on one of the first screens that you get to.

LOL. Well, I personally don't need the information, but if I were you, it would be the next place I would look. 🙂

Bolded part is how you get into your BIOS.
