CD drive not being picked up by Winxp on every boot up - why?

Hey all, quick one for you..

I just setup a new PC

Abit IC7
Pentium 4 - 2.4c @3 Ghz
1GB HyperX 3500 Ram
3 Hard drives (ide1-master & slave, ide 2 - slave)
1 DVD drive (on a Promise IDE PCI card)
1 CDRW drive (master on IDE2)

When I boot up, the 4 drives on the two IDE channels are identified, but upon Windows starting, the CDRW drive is not found...if I go into the device manager and look for new hardware, it finds it, and everything works fine, but its highly annoying to have to do that every time...

Any ideas why? Thanks.

Dude i have this same problem but with both of my cd drives. Although when I go to the device manager it doesnt detect them. They dont even work in the BIOS even though they are still detected but as hard drives or something. I dont know but this sucks big time.

Do you have the most recent bios? It was released on the 18th and seems to have lots of fixes for hard drives and ide channels

# Added new option "HDD Change Message" in Advanced BIOS Features and the default setting is "Disabled". If this option is changed to "Enabled", the system will show warning message and prompt for a confirmation when one or more than one HDD had been added into or removed from the system.
# Changed the default setting of "OnCip Serial ATA" to "Auto".
# Revised the wording of IDE channels inside the BIOS Setup. IDE Channel 0, 1, 2, and 3 are changed to 1, 2, 3, and 4.
# Revised the error reading of fan speed for specific CPU cooling fan when FanEQ 60% enabled.
# Fixed "CPU THRM-Throttling" function.
# Fixed the slow detection problem when HDD simulation card installed.
# Fixed the problem that SMARTDRV.EXE malfunction in DOS 6.22 environment.
# Fixed the problem that Windows 98 bootable floppy disk causes system hang up during loading CD-ROM driver when "OnChip Serial ATA" is set to "Auto".
# Added "Game Accelerator" technology.
# Removed options "Virus Warning" and "Force Update ESCD".
# BIOS Compile Date: 6/9/2003.

I've had similar problems caused by a bad drive. Couldn't figure out why the drives (both CDs sometimes, sometimes one), would not detect, then detect, then not, etc...

Eventually I started getting read errors on one of them when trying to install things and such. As soon as I ripped it out and replaced it, everything was fine.

It is XP, I'll check that out..

The drive is a fairly new Lite-on 40X burner..I would be surprised if it was bad already!

The CD drives missing might be because you have Nero or other CD burning software installed. This reg mod fixed my woes with missing CD ROM/RW drives:

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry
key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then reboot.

I've tried all these things

updated the BIOS
updated the firmware of the CDRW drive

I have no "upperfilters" or "lowerfilters" in my registry under that key.

Again, if I go into the device manager, under DVD/CD drives, if I choose to update, it finds the drive and then the drive works fine, but it is annoying to have to do that everytime.

The bios detects the drive just fine.

I think it has something to do with the Promise card drivers, but that is just a theory.

Any other ideas?
