CD drive no longer recognized by W98SE

I tried to run a CD and I get the message "There is no CD-ROM player attached to computer". It was there last time I played a music CD (last week). Anyone have any ideas? I have already put in a new CD drive and windows did not detect it as PNP. I tried to add it with add new hardware, and no luck. Can't find a device to install. Could the IDE controller just stop working?
