cd distortion

On my dad's computer, the sound is distorted whenever a cd is played. It starts out fine, but increasingly, more and more distortion builds, until after about 10 mins or so, the cd is almost impossible to hear. The problem persists in both windows media player (old installation) and real player (newly installed) although in real player, it starts out fine on each new track, becoming a problem only towards the end of the tracks. This problem does not present itself when playing audio files off the hdd or when playing dvd's. It makes no difference which optical drive he is using.
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.

p.s. My dad does not have any antivirus/antispyware programs installed, so could there be a virus/spyware program that would do this?

Yes, any virus or spyware that hogs system resources could cause the problem and a whole lot more.

Tell your dad that not having AV and anti-spyware is like having casual sex with everyone on the web. He's a danger to everyone whose address is in his address book and his Inbox. In effect, he's a "cyber-Typhoid Mary."

Not going on the Internet "that much" is not an excuse. "That much" is any intiger number greater than zero, and if you go on the web at all, you have to practice safe hex.. 😎

I'm gonna install some anti-virus/anti-spyware stuff tomorrow if i have time, but would a virus cause increasing distortion throughout the track? You can't hear it at the start, but by three or four mins in the track, it is definately there. Wouldnt the virus-maker direct the attack towards all sound, not just cd's, and wouldnt there be a better attack than just creating distortion?

p.s. Already dismissed the lens-cleaning issue, although they probably need it - it does the same on both optical drives.

Could this be a driver issue? My dad said that it was an issue before his mobo died, taking the hdd with it, so that rules out the posibility of virus/spyware.
