I read here about CD's and CD copying in a thread a while ago, but my search isn't doing very well.
<-- is incoherent due to going on 2nd day with throbbing headache

Link to national law saying that a person can have one single copy of an original CD as long as he keeps both the original and the copy for backup? I remember reading that in a thread a long time ago here, and thought I saw the law that went with it.

Thanks all,
nik (will keep looking)

*arg*

people around here say the same thing about being able to make/keep one copy if you have the original as well, but nobody can direct me to the stinkin' national law that gives permission -And I can't seem to find it. I've been looking all freaking afternoon, too.

Try looking under the Fair Use regs in Title 17.

"(a) Making of Additional Copy or Adaptation by Owner of Copy. -

Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided:

(1)

that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine and that it is used in no other manner, or

(2)

that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful."

Seems like the one to me. I've been wondering about that myself lately.

Hmm... thanks for pointing out the article (the completely obvious) to me (the completely oblivious).
