I'm having problems burning CD's on my Abit BP6 w/ Dual Celeron 366's OC'd to 550 running on Windows 2000. I'm currently using Adaptec 4.03d or whatever, and have an HP 10x4x32 burner. Whenever I burn at 10x or 8x, it always has a buffer underrun. When burning mp3's to .wav's for audio CD's, they underrun even if I convert them and then burn them. On my other computer (Abit KT7 and Tbird 850) they burn no problem ever. Both are hooked up on ATA 66, and the same problem still occurs. Any suggestions?

are they sharing the same ide channel?

I have noticed mp3s and some avi files (like my divx movies) like to burn at a slower rate and I am wondering if compressed files or the fact the single files are large have anything to do with it...I had one divx avi only would let me burn at 8x (didn't make a coaster just wouldn't let me burn...) Other divx movies no problem, 12x...

Try changing your DMA setting on the burner to see if that helps. Some burners like it on, while most work better with it disabled.

I usually have the drives set up this way to maximize stability and minimize possible conflicts:

main HDD - primary master
CDRW - secondary master
CD-ROM - primary slave

So, data burning into CD (HDD to CDR) will have separate IDE channels. Hope this may solve your problem.

this may sound a little odd but are you using tdk cdrs? I'm only asking as hp found a problem with burning tdk cdrs on that drive & fixed the problem by issuing an updated firmware!

i had some problems when my plextor was set as a slave to my primary master (boot) drive....the system would suddenly hang or crash half way into the copying..but it might have been caused by a variety of problems... the problem was solved when i changed the connections to

diamondmax 80 master1 (boot) drive
slave 1, none

ibm 15gig master2
plextor slave2

mitsumi cdrw, master3
hotswap bay,slave3

I believe my drive is running in PIO mode 4 or 2 or something. Should it be running in a different mode? Its currently hooked up to the Highpoint 366 currently, and I have the option in the hightpoint bios to change its mode. Any suggestions?

It should really be running in dma if you expect 10x and 8x burns....

win2k is a little differnet in where to enable it...some guy here or in the tech forum yesterday had near same problem and some guy list where this is to be enabled at.

Have you ever been able to burn at 10x or 8x? And you do have cd-r's that will burn at 10x right? (hey, just checking ;) )

Anyhow, if you used to be able to burn at 10x and you can't anymore, you might want to check something. Put in a long audio cd and play it while skipping back and forth between the 1st and last track. If it has problems doing that or if some of the tracks pause and stutter while you're listening to it, you might think about regreasing your drive. (doing so would probobly void your warranty so you should really think about RMA'ing it first) I recently regreased my burner because it was doing similar things and now it works. Again, i'm not sure this is the problem anyway because you can still burn at 6x right?
