CD Burning Problem...Can't Burn at 8x, only 4x??

I had a Sony 4x burner and now replaced it with an 8x Sony writer. I can burn from the HD at 8x but not copy CDs at 8x. Only 4x.
I get errors at 8x. It says that the source can't read fast enough. I tried to reason this out. My Aptiva is almost three years old. I'm not sure of the read speed of the CdRom. I think it may only be 40x. Well if 40x read is too slow for 8x writting, then how fast would a CdRom have to be for a 32x CD writer? The fastest CDroms are only abou 56x. So I'm confused???? I also swithched to Adapec 4.5 at the same time. AMDk6-500 winME (my Aptiva).

I put that 4x Sony in another computer I have and have basically the same problem. It tells me the source ( even the HD ) cannot read fast enough.

Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

1)check if the dma is enabled on both the cd drives
2) put the reader and writer on two different IDE channels.
3) May not work for you but try Nero

I'm not familiar with Adapec but have done the following in the past to cure the same problem(s)

in addition to what zzzzz said...

uninstall and reinstall the cd writing software (nero is better)...even tho you went from a sony 4x to a sony 8x...

check the software settings and uncheck anything that says you're doing it "on the fly"

if you haven't already done it, DEFRAG your hard drive - you'd be surprised how this can effect it...

while burning, don't do nuthin' else...the 16x and ups have the various "burn proof" softwares that let you do other stuff while burning...

don't be confused...personally I let my burner be the source and target for copying and so it's a 40x read speed with 32x write, you don't *have* to have a separate drive to read...i've heard that you should stay at 16x to burn music...we do a ton of cds at 32x with no ill effects and yes I don't care what they say, I personally feel that MEDIA DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE...ie. are you using cheapo cdr's?

Gee Patrick ...............you're thorough.
You guys have given me plenty to approach this with. I'll continue to work on this. I'll check every one of the things that you zzzz have mentioned. I'm ordering one of those 32x burners from Staples ( too good to pass up ), so I have to get this resolved. I really like the idea of speeding up my burning time.

Thanks again guys.

I had the same problem, Adaptec will test you data and audio speeds for extraction speeds. I had a cd drive that the audio tested at 1x so music cd's I was stuck at 1x. I was able to burn at 8x on other types of cd's.

Bottom line if you are going disc to disc you need a good cd drive not just a fast one.

Good luck:)
