CD Burning help

My computer has been crashing during the read phase of burning a CD. I have a Plextor 8/4/32 burner. I tried using various burning saftware, and it still crashed. It simply freezes with the harddrive light on. Is this a problem with my Hard drive? I have A maxtor 20Gig 7200rpm drive that I bought over the summer. I have burned CD's with it before without problem. The only thing new in the system is the memory, but I am not sure if it started at that same time I upgradeed The computer will occasionally freeze. Could it be a Memory problem? Can anyone help me??

Remove the new memory and see if the problem resolves itself. I had controller drivers cause this problem before. Maybe chipset drivers are corrupt??? Rare, but maybe... Good luck.

Is the Burner on the same IDE cable as the hard drive? If so, put it on the Secondary Controller. Sometimes timing differences cause lockups (hard drive is much faster than burner). I never put CD-type devices on the same IDE cable(s) as my hard disks...I always put "like" devices together. For example, I might have:

Hard Disk - 1 Primary Master
Hard Disk - 2 Primary Slave
CD-ROM - Secondary Master
CDRW - Secondary Slave

Of course, the devices need their respective jumper pins set correctly.

I'm with okydoky on this,

Sounds like your new Mem chips are flaking out on you. Are you overclocking your memory? Are ALL YOUR MEMORY chips the same PC rating (PC100, PC133)?

In your BIOS; you should set your timing to whatever the SLOWEST of your memory is.

Good luck!

Well, I got a new stick of Ram, and tried burning a CD today, and it seemed to work. Thanks for the help guys!

Right, I don't have my CDRW on the same IDE as the hard drive, but I do ahve a question about that. I have an older Zip Drive on the same ribbon as the hardrive. Would that matter?
