I've got a plextor 40/12/40A CD-RW drive that came installed in my computer. I basically can't get it to burn a thing. I've tried nero and easy CD creator (came with the drive) and neither lets it work. I get random errors towards the end of the burn process and it just won't finish anything. Not at the very end but in the middle somewhere. I've tried switching the cable its on, its on the primary ide on master, with the dvdrom on secondary so I don't forsee that being a problem.

Its been having issues ever since it was new, random errors and wouldn't allow me to burn any faster than say 16-20x speeds... which it shouldn't do. Maybe its the software, maybe its the burner... any suggestions?

*EDIT*
I have actually been using a brand new ide cable now, that was advised by a friend of mine previously. I've checked the mode of the controller and it is not in PIO mode, so thats not the problem either.

I just attempted to burn another CD with roxio easy CD creator 5 basic (packaged with the burner) It got to about 56 percent complete and the progress bars stopped moving. The drive light goes green (was orange while burning) and sits there spinning, then goes back and forth from green to orange. Now it skips ahead to say that its written the track fine and it did not skip it, and says it finalizes the disc.

However it ejects it saying there was an error, which i am posting that below.

E8004189f: Write error - recovery needed - [03/0C/07]
E80041934: TrackWriter error - Flush failed - [T7127]
E80041925: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed - [T7118]

It consistently does this at this same point, after 50% done and on almost every CD no matter what speed.

Also, I have been using TDK 80 minute CD-R's.... They are recommended by plextor as being approved media. I cannot imagine that is the problem. Do you have any suggestions for better media?

It's most likely the burner. The only way to find out is to try another burner. If the same problem exists using a different burner, then the software is the problem.

If you haven't done this already: try a brand-new, flat, boring, 18-inch IDE cable, preferably an 80-wire one. Also update your burning software with the latest patch/update and confirm that the ATA/IDE controllers are not stuck in PIO mode (Device Manager > ATA/IDE Controllers > open each of the controllers and check on the Advanced tabs).

1. update the burner's bios
2. try the disks on another burner to make sure they are good
3. swap burners if you can get a hold of another one to put in the system to see if the system or the burner...

i've tried all 3 of those things with no success at all... i've taken my brothers sony burner and put it in mine, works fine. I've tried different cds and tried my cds on his burner and they work fine... i've updated the bios and that hasn't helped any either

Whenyou tried your bro's Sony burner and it worked fine. Then it's obvious the problem is your burner. The only resolve now is for you to get another burner. They are cheap now and you can even get a bargain at the For Trade/Sale Forum.

well I tried everything again before I gave up hope, I used roxio 6.0 from my brothers system. Basically I burned the first CD which was an assortment of files on the PowerRec setting (variable burn speed) and it went perfectly. THen I tried to burn a single file that was 700 megs, and it did the same thing it used to do even with the new program.

So the burner is capable of burning a quality disk at respectable speeds, however it only works part of the time!?!

Any other suggestions?
