hi to all on the anandtech forums :)

i'm currently in the market for a new CD Burner, but am quite confused when it actually came to selecting a product. if anyone would be able to provide me with a suggestion as to which product is the most reliable and fastest for about $US 250 ($500 if any aussies are reading).

Thanks in advance :)

Ageed, Plextor 12/10/32.

I highly doubt you will hear anyone, i mean anyone say otherwise.

Unless you already have SCSI, its the best thing out there. If you have SCSI you could get the 12/4/32, which IMO is better, because its SCSI (Although with BURN-Proof the IDE 12/10/32 is awesome, so the benefit of SCSI is pretty much gone. Only thing is with BP when it underruns it takes time to start writing again, which means it can be slower than SCSI if you try to load the system while you burn. But with SCSI you can still under run, although very very hard to do.)

"Plextor here too, but I'd question going CD-RW instead of CD-R."

What the heck you talking about boy? The only FAST CD-R only drives are the Plextor 8/20 and they are SCSI only. If you want 8X at all in IDE you have to get a CD-RW capable drive. Its not like you can't use regular CD-R disks with them.

Plextor is the only name that exists in these forums; and for a good reason. Their drives plain kick butt. I might just sell my 2-year old TEAC CD-R56S SCSI-2 (which has been a very good drive, except its incapability to do RAW packet writing in DAO mode for CloneCD) and buy a 12/4/32 to replace it.

Here's something no heard of much: Mitsumi 4804TE, and it's at buy.com for $116.

They're GREAT drives, work with everything (CloneCd etc), reliable, cheap, and you'll you're getting a fantastic deal. Read the reviews in cdmediaworld.com about them under 'buying a cd-writer' article. This model is listed as one of the top ones, without the top price.

Not too many know about Mitsumi, but they're one of the BESTdrives out there.

You can't go wrong choosing them

Good luck.

woops, wrong code!
