CD Burner Software

Can anyone out there recommend a popular and "free" software application for burning CDs and backing up data? One that I can download.

I don't think there are any free ones out but if you do choose to buy one please do yourself a favor and get Nero.

I personally have had excellent luck with adaptec/roxio.

The Nero shareware I believe is limited to 1x speed.🙁
I only saw the demo at download.com

Nero is not limited to 1x.

I have several packages installed. Roxio, Nero and CDRwin. I like them all and they all are about equal. The only thing I noticed is that Nero will not let me overburn any CDs. I have a NEC 7800 and a Lite-on 24x and even though both drives are capable of overburning (at least Nero says they are) it will not do it. CDRwin worked fine with overburning. I haven't decided yet which software to keep. I only need one and the other 2 will go.

I believe they are all in the same price range, so that doesn't really make a difference. They all have more or less the same feature set. I'd say, download some demo versions, try them out and buy the one you like.

Or, as pointed out before: dl some free burner software. There are plenty of free packages out there though I haven't tried any of them.
