My question is, what are the requirements to make a backup copy of a Playstation game?

My friend just bought a Philips 8/4/32 CD-RW and last night we tried to make some back up copys of our playstaion games...No luck. We were using Nero 5.0, the CD burned successfully but it would not play.

Are there some special settings in Nero that we do not know about? We were making a CD to CD copy, Is this the problem? Do you need RAW write capability to make a successful PSX backup, and if so does anyone know if the Phillips drive supports RAW?

Would we have better luck with Clone CD? Another friend of ours uses an old HP 4/4/24 and Cdrwin to make his backups and he has no prroblems.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Tonec, but I looked there last night but couldn't find any info that would help me. I might be looking in the wrong place, can you point me to a specific page, file etc.?

Thanks for the link rover825lover, it looks like his CD-RW drive is not supported for Clone CD. Does this mean he cannot even make a backup of a PSX game with Nero 5.0?

if you were trying to play the game in the playstation console, you'll need a modchip. or you can get bleem and play it on your comp.

He has a mod chip and a PS Hacker, neither work with the copied game. I don't think his writer is going to work for PSX games.

Nero is a great program to burn with but a terrible program to copy PSX games with. You really should stick with CDRWin to copy PSX games with. Also, copy the game to your HDD and then burn it. On the fly burning, IMO, is just too unreliable. Especially if you have an IDE burner.

As for the PSX not running the game, does the PSX at least play the logos? When you pop in a game, the PSX displays 2 logos then proceeds to load the game. Do you even get past the 2 logos? If so, then it could be you're burning at too high a speed. I've had that problem before and re-burned at a lower speed with positive results.

You can also try different media. The PSX doesn't like certain cd-r's. I currently use Ricoh but have used many others in the past. Sony, Maxell & TDK as some of the major brands you'll find that are good for PSX backups. Frankly it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Hell, if I could afford it I'd buy Mitsui or Taiyo Yuden cd-r's for my backups.

I hope this response helps. Feel free to e-mail me if you still have questions.

jaylek55,

Thanks for the help. After dinner I went over to my friends house and we tried to burn the PSX backups with CDRWin and...Presto! Everything went fine at both 4X and 8X burns using a HDD image file. We even made a backup of an old really scratched up game that had 126 read errors and by setting CDRWin to replace the errors with 0s we made a successful backup that actually played.

His CD burner still isn't supported by Clone CD so I have talked him into taking it back and getting the HP 8/4/32 at the same price that is supported.

Thanks again :)
