CD burner not burning

I installed a DVD burner a few months back and since then I haven't used the CD burner. Previously I had two CD drives, the burner and a normal one. The normal one started acting up so I didn't even bother keeping it when I put the DVD drive in.

Now I try burning a CD and Nero stops in the middle with a burn error. Looking at the CD, it appears nothing has been burned to it and it remains blank when I re-insert it. My theory was that something was wrong with the connection, as I'd put the burner where the old CD player which was causing problems had been.

So I switch the DVD burner and the CD burner, still the same problem. WMP doesn't recognize a burner but when I put a blank disc in I am prompted as to which program I want to use to copy/burn a CD (by Windows).

Basically: CD burner can read CDs, cannot burn them.

Any ideas?

can't your dvd burner burn both cd's and dvd's?

Did you install burning software for dvd burner.

I would probably just uninstall nero and reinstall it and see if it straightens itself out

No my DVD burner only burns DVDs. I don't think the problem is Nero because windows media player can't burn anything either

Oops my DVD burner does burn CDs, but only at 16x so I'd still like to fix this if it's possible and get back up to 52x

well if this is real recent I suppose you could try rewinding the system a few days.

figured that your dvd burner would do both I assume it had its own software that you installed may have confused other software or disabled it somehow.

Yes it could be something like this. It seems the CD player burns fine at 16x now, but I'm not sure because I play the first track in WMP and then the it all freezes up. The first time I did it the computer even restarted. I have tons of spyware problems so I wouldn't be surprised if I just have to format, looks like the whole system is fscked. I need to lay off the porn sites
