CD Burner making poor quality cd's

My CD burner is turning out cd's that are skipping. This is a new drive and so far I have copied two cd's and made two w/ the same results......skipping. I have tried burning at different speeds and w/ different brands of cd's but the results are the same. Is my drive toast or is it simply operator error? I have Nero 6 Ultra Edition and the drive is HP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had that problem with Maxell, tdk and a couple other cheap brands. also a time or 2 when I needed to defrag.

skipping accross a lake? Or is there some player they are skipping in? Some players don't like some brands of cd-r. Can you copy the data back from the cd afterwards? If so, the problem could lie with the player's distaste for the brand of disk you chose.

Does the product you make play OK in the burner you used, but skips in another CD-ROM player?

I made two more cd's since writting this message and one skips and the other is perfectly fine. I have not tried downloading the data back to the PC from a skipping disk. I may try another brand when I get my next batch of blank cd's. The one cd I made recently that didn't skip in my truck stereo did skip in my cd rom but didn't in my cd burner drive.
