CD Burner help

i have a hp-cdwriter 8200 extenal. i have it hooked up through the USB and everything. Downloaded Nero demo and tried to make a cd. 15% into the burn at 4x it stops, saying "buffer underun error." I have an xp 1700 and never had this problem before. Downloaded newest drivers, but it doesn't report upgraded drivers in "my computer." Any help is appreciated, need some cd's before I go for spring break.

Burn at the rate your CD R was intended to write at, and enable the checkbox that says "Enable Buffer Underburn Protection" or something like that.

hmm, I'm no super genius, but I'll give this a shot.

1. have you removed the "old" drivers & software completely and then tried to install the new drivers?

2. Have you tried different media?

3. If I remember correctly USB is 12mbps shared which equals 1.5MB per second transfer rate total (if I did the math right). So how many USB devices do you have on your pc? have you tried to use just the cd burner with no other devices on the chain? I don't see how it could be choking on bandwidth (especially at 4x), but I guess anything's possible.

4. Have you looked for updated firmware?

umm, that's all I can think of for now.

his burner might be an older burner which never came equipped with buffer underrun protection.

try burning at a slower speed.

Only cdburner is plugged in and I have memorex cds that have been burned at 16x before. IDK, what else to do. I'll try deleting old drivers.

Yeah I don't think the 8200 series came with burn-proof or any other sort of protection.

I could be wrong though

long shot, but have you checked to see if your hard drive is in Ultra-DMA mode?

i got the 8250i, it died twice on me.
the first time it died i got a rma, then the replacement died half a year later, the problem was just like what you described. it burns into like 5 percent then just stops. and i tried 3 or 4 different programs with the same problem. so eventually i gave up and bought a new one.

Speaking of ultra-dma, do you have that turned off for the burner. If not, try turning it off.
