I've got a Dell Inspiron 1100 with a fresh install of Windows XP Home SP2 that is unable to burn CD-Rs.
When I use the "Send To" command on the right popup context menu, Windows XP burns the CD and then fails to complete the command. This problem existed before I installed CDBurnerXP Pro 3. No other CD burning software or utilities are installed.
When I use CDBurnerXP Pro 3 to burn CD-Rs it fails at the "close the session" step.
This machine will not recognize CD-Rs burned in this way. If I take those same burned CD-Rs and stick them in different computers the other computers can read the contents fine.
I've tried two different brands of CD-R media so I'm pretty sure it's not media related.
Occasionally the System log of the Event Viewer contains a sequence of the following error: "The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block".
One side note: the internal modem on this machine was damaged a few months ago. The owner replaced it with a generic PCMCIA modem he purchased from CompUSA. I believe the CD burner stopped working around this time.
I've removed the original internal modem and even removed the working PCMCIA modem - the CD burner still doesn't work.
It seems that either the CD burner is bad or a motherboard component is damaged. Short of purchasing a replacement CD burner is there a way to determine which of these two is responsible for the problem?
