CD Burner can only use nero?!

Here's the story... I work in a chem lab at Purdue University and we just ordered a new >$20k microscope and a computer to go with it.

The computer is pretty generic P4, except for the software that's installed to work with the microscope, but we're having problems with the CD Burner.

It won't burn through Windows (WinXP Pro)... only using nero. Windows only recognizes it as a CD-ROM, but we can burn through Nero so it does work. The company cough*Fryer*cough says it's supposed to be that way and the drive can't burn through windows. (Is it me or is that crap?)

Most of the people in lab aren't computer people (I'm the resident computer fixer-person) so they like copy-paste under XP... so right now i'm trying to figure out how to fix this...

The drive, according to windows, is a Mitsumi CR-48XGTE.

The problem is it looks like Mitsumi is just a generic drive maker (for rebranding) and their website support bites... all the drivers are for Win2000, at the latest, and I don't know if my drive is the 480 or 485 (and if getting the wrong drivers would be bad). Breaking the system would be bad considering it's not mine, and very important to what we do...

So now i'm looking for advice, got any?

Why dont you just install the packet writing software,nero calls it Incd.

this way you can drag & drop files to the cd.

What he said.
If that doesn't work...Newegg 🙂.

unfortunately considering what we spent to build this setup i don't think replacing the drive is allowed

so of this software is very finicky (ie. bad) so I don't think my boss would be too cool with that

1. Nero has it's one features for dragging to the CD. If the version you got doesn't have it, update. if it still doesn't have it, as I don't know if the OEM version does or not, get retail or replace the drive w/ a Lite-on for $38 shipped. If you make it the same master/slave settings, it should all be fine.
2. XP has its own features for dragging to the CD, but that are disabled for some f*cked up reason (it's a Mitsumi, so don't waste your time worrying).

3. The question: why do you need to drag & drop to the CD, anyway? If you're so worried about messing w/ the setup, then the CD that burns things should be separate from thr microscope one. Or you could drag & drop into a new job in Nero.

I believe to work with WinXP (for drag n drop), the burner has to support for the MR (Mt. Rainier) format. Many drives that "support" MR, didn't implement the spec very well in their initial firmware releases. Check Mitsumi's web site as you may need to update the drive's Firmware.
. Otherwise, you can DL the latest version of Nero's InCD (recently posted) for similar functionality. Roxio's packet writing is a bit more flexible as it can format the disks on the fly (you have to pre-format your disks to use InCD for drag-n-drop). You can get the base version of Roxio 6 for around $10. if you want to try it.
. Also it's possible that XP doesn't recognize your drive. As far as I know, all burning software has a list of supported drive definitions which needs to be updated as new drives emerge. See if M$ has an updated list for XP.
. Mt. Rainier is "supposed" to be a "standardized" access method, so that drive definition lists aren't needed. C'est la vie...

it's not so much need as all the other computers in lab are dells with the built-in fully supported CD-RW drives, and like i said I'm the one who knows anything about computers in lab, so everyone want the new computer to work the same way as the Dells

to me it'd be just a bit annoying, but I had enough fun trying to learn how to burn a CD in XP, so avoiding using a seperate program would make life easier
(and partially it didn't make sense to me why a RW couldn't burn in XP)

🙁 Good luck. If you can replace the drive, the cheap Lite-on from Newegg shoul work according to this.

Right-click on the offending drive, go to the Recording tab. Make sure "Enable CD-Recording on this device" is turned on (or something to that effect).

if the recording tab isn't there then you'll have to go to regedit & do this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

- All CD drives show up in same key

- "Drive Type" value determines whether the drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

set the value to 2
