This week I bought a new 1.7 GHz, 512 mb, 30 gb, 15.7' SVGA+ inspiron 8200 with a mobility 9000 (sorry about the list but I had to brag a little... none of my friends are computer people... don't understand...). Anyway's, as usual, has been some teething problems with the new graphics card. The problem I am seeing is that PowerPoint crashes all the time. Dell has released a new driver for the card but the problem is that the only package they offer is for a floopy boot disk.
I didn't buy a floppy drive so I need another option. I tried using the floppy to make a bootable CD but somefile, I believe it is the bios update copying software, needs to write to the disk.
My Question to you all is if it is possible for me to make a bootable CD that creates a RAMdisk or something similar that I can use to run the one little flash bios program. I searched all over the web but couldn't find any one who had done this. Is there something fundamental I am missing here?
I know that is anyone can do this it is you guys on AnAndTech, if someone can come up with a completely generic system to do this that will work on a CD I would build a webpage for it and put your name on it.

You probably mean a new firmware/BIOS for the graphics card, since a driver has to be installed from Windows...

But anyway, Nero can make a bootable CD from a floppy disk. You can get the demo if you don't already have it.

If you want to build a boot disk or copy one on another box and image it for use with Nero, download Winimage and create a .ima file. Another advantage of this is that you can create larger images like 2.88 without actually using a floppy drive.

I already did this, the problem I had is that the firmware installer/flasher software needs to write to the disk for some reason and obviously it can't do this to a CD. I know that when people set up these dedicated servers and firelfalls they create an emulated disk in the ram. I need to do something like this or find somebody with a floppy drive I can use for this Laptop. Does anyone know if a USB drive will work?

I dont know if this will work, but its worth a shot.

make a directory called c:\adrive or something... then in cmd type "subst a: c:\adrive " and it should make you a drive a that is actually that directory. Then maybe the dell extraction thing wont know the difference and will extract to that directory.
