CD Blanks Speed Ratings

What good are those 12x/8x/whateverx speed ratings? I just got a new 12x drive and was able to use some old blanks just fine that can't possibly be 12x. What's the deal?

if it says 12x on them is means that they are tested up to 12x and are garanteed to work at 12x. Some older ones that say 8x or 6x might still work, but it's not 100% sure.
