Rape as a "magical experience" or, an act of violence that benefits society?

That's how one student at Central Connecticut State University describes an attack that has devastated women around the world.

A controversial op-ed piece was published Wednesday with the headline "Rape only hurts if you fight it". Opinion editor John Petroski references Roman history, how women were abducted and made to marry Roman men.

Petroski goes on to say that rape is a magical experience that benefits society as a whole. He says, "Take ugly women, for example. If it weren't for rape, how would they ever know the joy of intercourse with a man who isn't drunk?"

CCSU junior Lillian Brabmer is among the many critics of the editorial. "It's not a magical experience, there's nothing good about rape, and we shouldn't be promoting and endorsing it on a college campus."

Junior India Somerville adds, "You can't say something as far as rape benefits a society because that let's other people think that it's OK to rape people."

CCSU students are so outraged by Petroski's piece, they've put up "Wanted" posters for him across campus. The opinion of the paper's editorial staff is that Petroski wrote a piece of satire, but students say that's a poor excuse for publishing the piece.

Students rallied at the school Thursday and called for the resignations of Petroski and the paper's editor. The university's president defends Petroski's right to free speech, while at the same time calling the article "a clear violation of responsible journalism".

Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It

Most people today would claim that rape is a terrible crime almost akin to murder, but I strongly disagree. Far from a vile act, rape is a magical experience that benefits society as a whole. I realize many of you will disagree with this thesis, but lend me your ears and I?m sure I?ll sway you towards a darkened alley.

If it weren?t for rape, Western Civilization might not exist as we know it today. When the Romans were faced with a disproportionate ratio of women to men in the early kingdom, they had to do something, lest their fledgling society die for lack of sons. To solve their little dilemma, they did what any reasonable man would do: they threw a festival for their Sabine neighbors, and then stole and raped their women. It?s quite logical; in fact I don?t understand why the settlers at Plymouth didn?t do the same to the local Indians?it certainly would have saved on shipping costs.

Obviously, in the case of the Rape of the Sabines, rape was a tremendous help to society. The Sabine women, for their part, didn?t seem to mind so much, as they threw themselves between their brutish old Sabine husbands and their charming new Roman ones to prevent bloodshed when the Sabine men came to reclaim their wives. Yet even when society was totally against a rape, the raunchy act has benefited society too. Where would the Romans be, after all, if it weren?t for the Rape of Lucretia infuriating the people to the point of overthrowing their last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus? If it weren?t for that event, the world might never have had the Roman Republic for a pristine example of a flawless government.

Rape?s glorious advantages are not, however, exclusively found from 2,000-year-old examples. In actuality, rape?s advantages can very much be seen today. Take ugly women, for example. If it weren?t for rape, how would they ever know the joy of intercourse with a man who isn?t drunk? In a society as plastic-conscious as our own, are we really to believe that some man would ever sleep with a girl resembling a wildebeest if he didn?t have a few schnapps in him? Of course he wouldn?t?at least no self-respecting man would?but there in lies the beauty of rape. No self-respecting man would rape in the first place, so ugly women are guaranteed a romp with not only a sober man, but a bad boy too; and we all know how much ladies like the bad boy.

Ugly women are not, however, the only people who benefit from rape?prisoners enjoy its many perks too. What, after all, could possibly be more boring than spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day? The answer, of course, is spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day and never getting some hot action. With rape, prisoners never have to worry about that. Instead, they merely need worry about treating their rapists with enough love and respect to earn a quick reach-around.

But if there is one bread and butter reason for why rape should not only be accepted, but even endorsed, it is because our news editors are in dire need of interesting stories for our front page. Bookstore stories? Fossils? One dollar coins? Please. Now, some saucy circle-jerk rape action? Yeah, that?s the ticket.

What is sad is I am betting at least some people on ATOT agree with this worthless piece of crap. Not you OP, the journalist.

**EDIT**
Satire, or not, it isn't in good taste at all. And people that think that way usually only play it off as a joke after they get confronted about it.

Are ugly women proportionally more likely to be raped than attractive ones?

Moral issues aside, he already fails on logic...

rapists don't rape ugly women.

but i think that's good satire myself, which it had to have been. And of course, there's a witchunt for him. Makes me think of jonathan swift's a modest proposal

Bro-rape is the number one crime amongst males in college. Only you can help put an end to it.

lol, those quotes by the students seem to suggest that they're upset because he supports rape, not because the satire is in poor taste

I can't believe someone would be that stupid to not write this in satire but it's a rather touchy subject.

No kidding. Sounds like a lot of people can't recognize that.

It is absolutely blantantly obvious that it's "satire", but that doesn't justify it in any way, especially for a sensitive matter like this.

Who determines what is in good taste as far as satire goes.

This was not a case of 'oh yeah I was just joking'....it was written to create a reaction. Just his "ugly women" line should have been enough for anyone with 1/2 a brain to know it was tongue in cheek.

I am thinking there are too many bleeding hearts out there that want to stomp out all freedom if it doesn't fit their molds.

It's not that it's in good taste or not ... it's just not funny. :p

For how to do a funny skit on rape, see George Carlin.

"They'll say 'You can't joke about rape, rape's not funny.' I say **** you, I think it's hilarious, how do you like that? I can prove to you that rape is funny. Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd. See, why do you think they call him Porky, huh? I know what you're gonna say, 'Elmer was askin for it.'"

...

"Do you think there's more rape at the equator or the north pole? Most people think it's the equator; I say it's the north pole. Most people think the equator because it's hot down there, women don't wear a lot of clothing, men can see women's tits, they get horny, and there's a lot of ****ing going on. That's exactly why there's LESS rape at the equator, because there's a lot of ****ing going on! Look at the population figures. Billions of people live near the equator - how many Eskimos we got, thirty, thirty-five? Nobody's gettin' laid at the north pole, it's too ****ing cold! Guys will say to their wives 'Hey, tonight honey, huh, huh?' 'Are you crazy, the windchill factor is 300 below!'"

...

"You know what the biggest problem an Eskimo rapist has? Trying to get wet leather leggings off a woman who's kicking. You ever try to get leather pants off someone who didn't wanna take 'em off? You would lose your hardon in the process!"

just because it's sensitive means you can't talk about it? It's such blatant satire that I can't see how you can read it any other way, which would mean that it's actually saying that rape is a terrible thing.

What I got was that even if it is satire, there are many people (as is evident here) that won't understand that this is satire. This in turn could possibly lead to someone using this article to justify rape as something that "benefits society"

;) :p

Did I ever say that the guy didn't have the right to be a tool?
He can be an ass all he wants as long as he isn't hurting another living thing doing it, but it doens't make him any less of an ass for believeing these things. But yes I do see your point. I should have read it a little bit more closely. I just think I am really sensitive about this right now. Sorry about that.

**EDIT**
Just like I saw Mein Khemp (I don't think I spelled it right) by Hitler in the bookstore. Although I think the book is revolting, I don't protest the fact that it is in the book store.

Also, satire can go too far sometimes. For instance, if someone on 9/12/01 had written a satire praising the attack, do you think that would be in bad taste? I would. Although I would defend the guys right to say something so stupid, I would think he is a total tool for saying it.
