CCNA from Cisco

I need a carreer change its tough to find info on this subject. My funds are tight now can someone recomend a book (its hard to tell if the amazon books are current) that I can read to see if this is a good path for me to move in?

I can vouch for the Cisco press library ($37 hardcover / $27 for kindle). I passed with a 944 using that book and the GNS simulator for practice. Just don't rush and take notes as you go. #1 tip: practice subnetting and be fast at it. The free practice test questions that come with (at least) the hardcover edition are absolute gold.

If you read something and you have a question don't just keep reading. Supplement your learning with Google searches. There's a lot of information to be had from Cisco, various blogs, and free training sites like this. Take your time to figure out the what-ifs as you go.

It's really not difficult to tell if books are current. First look at the required exam numbers on the Cisco CCNA page, then look at the exam number on the book. If they match, they are current.

Cisco has a lot of resources for CCNA like games and stuff.

www.1examamonth.com has a bunch of free videos.

The cisco press books (study and foundation guides) are very good. GNS or the $129 Network Simulator from Cisco is great (the latter has exercises and labs you can work through...many students don't know where to begin with GNS).

www.getcertifiedforless.com has CCNA test vouchers as low as $99 at times.

I used the boson netsim a few years ago and did pretty well. This was back before they had gns though.

One thing I regret doing is memorizing all of the isdn stuff and then later finding out that they didn't test it anymore. Probably could have failed the test the first time a few weeks earlier had I used a current book.

sweet thanks for that!

are the sims good? I have most of the hardware sitting around though I need to toss ram in some for the 12.4 upgrade.

IE am I really missing anything by not using real hardware?

The CiscoPress Network Simulator is pretty much like being on the real gear.

I'd still try to get some hands on or at least view front and back images (visio stencils are really good) to get an idea where the console cable is, the network ports, etc.

CCNA IMHO doesn't really need much gear with all the tools out there.

ha yeah I dont need gear around to get familiar, I get plenty of that at work

I just want to fill the massive gaps in knowledge and get the cert to prove it

then hopfully move on to CCNP

At least for the exam, I'd say that the #1 thing you can get from a sim or real equipment is getting comfortable with the workflow in IOS. Moving from one mode to the next. Making mistakes and subsequently being able to realize what you did wrong and then doing it correctly. Getting used to the messages that it spits back out at you and how to check what you're doing as you go.
