He's really their first bonafide ace import who is still young since Jimmy Key?

Solid move by the Yankees, they need top-shelf pitching and they got it in CC. I didn't think they were going to sign him after nearly a month of that $140 million dollar offer on the table.

In order to get the deal completed, ESPN the Magazine's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees added a seventh year to their original six-year, $140-million offer, bringing the total package to seven years and $160 million -- by far the biggest contract for any pitcher in history.

Wow.

this is why the baseball season is so damn long. 81 home games of 40k+ asses in seats to provide revenue to support high priced players that play once every 5 days.

Wow.

I know...I wish I kept playing baseball when I was young.

Well, that isn't really true. Baseball seasons have almost always been at least 100+ games since the late 1800s and those guys playing weren't making shit.

You make a good point but my purpose was just to continuously bitch about how long the damn season is... hard for a non-hardcore-fan to care about every game. You tell me the Mets lost 10-7 last night and the only thing I would say is, who cares, they play 2 more against the same damn team tonight and the next. You want to know the funny thing though? The biggest draw for the subsequent games is... who's pitching? Is that why these professional athletes who play every 5th day get paid so much? Awesome. But hey, the guy may win 20 games for you - well worth $20mil/season.

I used to be hardcore but that was when I didn't realize other sports were actually more fun to watch/follow - and salaries aren't as dispicable, players actually play.

I can understand that. Salaries are a tough one to swallow. Before players' salaries were so high, the owners pocketed most of that money. Now, these guys make a killing. I mean, 1 win over replacement is valued at 1.5 million dollars these days. Crazy.

As for season length, I dunno I've always enjoyed it. I think baseball is fascinating because after 160 games, playoff hunts often come down to those last one or two games. Again though, I can understand how it is a little tedious. I think most casual baseball fans pick a few games a week to watch. I know that with a lot of games I watch them while I'm making dinner or eating or working on a report or something like that.

edit: The Yankees undoubtedly overpaid for CC. $160 million / 7 yrs! Holy sweet jesus.

There is no doubt Sabathia is an excellent pitcher but I think signing as a Yankee is a mistake for him. He is going to have a ton of pressure on his shoulders as a starting pitcher. I bet Yankee managment is expecting him to win 20+ games right out of the gate. I'm guessing the Dodgers couldn't compete with the offer because they are trying to keep Manny but I think he would have been a better fit in LA.

Yeah, supposedly the Nationals are willing to go 8 yrs / $160 million for Teixeira. If Teixeira goes for $20 million / yr, imagine what Pujols will command when he hits the FA market? He'll be older, but I imagine he could pull near $30 million / year, considering he's a much better player than Teixeira.

i agree. who knows how he's going to deal with the pressure of pitching in ny. he's going from the NL to the AL, going from small town to the big city, and his heart was really wanting to go to a west coast team closer to home.
hopefully he can handle the pressure.

speaking as a yanks fan, the mets got a better deal with santana, who is a lot more proven than cc IMO, and he proved he can handle NY last season.

You know what sucks? Not only do my Brewers lose CC, but he's moving to the AL. He had an awesome bat to go along with a surreal arm.

Once again, a small market team can not compete and can't keep a good player on their roster. It's such a freaking joke. I love CC, but I hope he fails horribly for the Yankees.

This is such a crazy deal. It's 7 years / $160 million, with an opt-out clause after year 3. The ONLY other bid out there was Milwaukee's $100 million, so the Yankees had to bid against themselves, yet again, just to land CC. Indeed, he didn't want to play in NY, but no one was going to turn down the extra $60 million to play there. It's crazy that only 2 teams bid for him, but I suppose everyone knew no one was going to touch the Yankees' offer.

I love how the Yankee's offered him $140 million like a month ago and told him that the offer wouldn't be on the table forever. Yet here we are a month later, after he's played the field, the offer is not only still on the table, but it's been increased. Way to stick to your guns, Hank. I hope he's a bust.

I hope he fails like all the big money pitchers Yankees signed so far this decade. Having the biggest payroll in pro sports but can't even get into the post season. Epic LULZ.

I got $1000 on him going down next year for at least 1 month. Milwaukee pitched him like 100 innings in the last week of the season + 300lbs

This guarantees them a World Series win!

You know, just like signing Mussina before 2001.
And Giambi in 2002.
And Matsui in 2003.
And A-rod in 2004.
And Pavano in 2005.
And Damon in 2006.
