Well, the bank balance didnt match my balance. Got to flippin through the statements, seems someone used my CC to sign up for a Credit Monitor service. Went to the bank and filed a fraud form so the funds will be credited back to my account. Called the Credit company and explained that the account was fraudulently opened. Going to file a police report. What should I look out for? I assume they got my CC number from a reciept I left lying around, but the fact they signed up for a Credit Monitor makes me a bit worried. So, what else should I be doing besides talking with my bank and filing a police report? Anything?
Damn, this has not been a good month. On the flip side, they charge went through 1/30, posted to my account 2/2 and I caught it today. Hooray for keeping a close eye on my finances.

I dont. I hope *I* catch the bastard. i already have a name that the Credit Agency gave me, but a White Pages search turns up nothing. I'm actually going to call them back here in a bit and check to see what social # was used for the account. If its theirs, I'm gonna nail their ass to the wall. If its mine, I'm gonna be worried cause that means they have my social. Anyways, off to file a police report.

I believe the Reporting Agencies (TRW, Esperian et al) now have methods in place for people reporting CC fraud. Might want to give a look to see what is there for you as well.
Good luck with that...

Are you sure you didn't send in some offer that, buried in the fine print, said you signed up for the Credit Monitor service? That's not uncommon.

Yep, they often send you a $10 check or something bogus like that, but in the fine print you let them bill you after 90 days or so. Also, if you did one of those $1 credit checks, they often charge you full membership if you didn't cancel after 90 days.

Call up equifax and or the other three bureaus and set up a fraud alert. It will stay on for 6 months. If you call Equifax, they will automatically set this up on the other accounts. Then, any time somebody checks your credit it will say that you may have been a victim and that you recommend calling your home phone before extending credit.

My bank has already told me I wont have to pay anything. They'll credit the amount taken plus any overdraft fees assosciated from this little affair. I like my bank :)

Anyways, gonna do some more legwork on this Monday.
