CBS/Last.FM reported to have given listeners data to RIAA

Interesting, didn't know last.fm was owned by CBS. Kind of sucks that this happened, but then again was it really a good idea for people to broadcast to the world the fact that they were listening to unreleased tracks. Can't say I really have a whole lot of sympathy for them.

Wait, I thought Last.fm was legal because it counted as something of a radio station?

Last.fm is legal. This is about their Scrobbling software, which keeps track of what songs users are listening to on their own computer using media players such an WMP, iTunes, Winamp, or whatever. Apparently the RIAA is wanting to go after people who have downloaded unreleased tracks, and Scrobbler provides the evidence they need to do this (the time when people were listening to these tracks and their IP address).
