This reporting is bad...really bad. Opening paragraph of this news story:

(CBS) Arizona's new immigration law empowers police to ask anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally for ID. The Obama administration calls it unconstitutional.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/22/eveningnews/main6703953.shtml#addcomm

More fuel to the fire of the idiots that do not understand what the law is about and go off crying foul... The status can only be checked if the person is being held/suspected/pulled over for a crime. The cops DO NOT just suspect you are an illegal and ask for your papers if they see you on the street..

OP, read the fucking law. Any lawful contact can result in a demand for proof of citizenship. This applies to suspects, witnesses, and victims equally. CBS' characterization of the law is closer to correct than yours. Given that cops only have to make up another reason for stopping a person this functionally means they can stop and demand proof of citizenship from anyone at any time. "Your taillight looked a bit dim. By the way, let's see your papers."

I am waiting to see what kind of proof of legality everyone must carry on their person before I jump off the fence. I have a gut feeling that the requirement will be far less stringent than some believe it will be.

No! That's not possible! CBS? Telling lies? *cough* Bush reserve story *cough*. Who can take CBS seriously? They have about as much credibility as MTV does in terms of political coverage.

Anyone who has actually taken the time to read anything about the law knows they are spewing complete bullshit to try and 'fix' the 'problem' of the vast majority of Americans supporting the law.

The police already have the right to ask you for an ID. Everytime I have ever been stopped, the police always asked for my White-Boy ID. I would expect the same for anyone else.

I say arrest the illegals put them on a bus and drop them all off in Washington, DC. That would be a political statement.

All aboard the freedom train!

i like how you instruct the OP to 'read the fucking law' and then get the bolded wrong. it's lawful stop, detention, or arrest. so suspects yes, witnesses and victims no.

Any lawful contact? Iron Wing, WTF do you think that means? Pulling over to the side of the road and saying 'show me za papers!' Do you know what lawful contact means? What a dumb ass you are.

I stand corrected. The original law as passed and signed by Jan Brewer contained the phrase "lawful contact". The law was later amended to read "STOP, DETENTION OR ARREST" by a separate act (House Bill 2162).

The result is the same as far as arbitrary stops are concerned. Police already stop motorists on a whim. Now they can perform immigration checks during these arbitrary stops.

They can also slip some heroin into your pocket when they stop you. Your point?

Huh?

The Mule slips some heroin into the Cop's pocket so you want to deport the Cop? Yup, that makes sense. Your point?

Resident aliens need to have their green card on them. Typically most Americans have drivers licenses. I also have a social security number I can provide the police (which I have done in the past when I was pulled over and had no license atm). I can't see it being anything more than that.

So the cops approach someone via a stop, detention, or arrest. They cannot provide a green card, drivers license, and the social security number matches someone born in Maine in 1935... red flags could be raised.

I do like the 287(g) program we have here in Nashville. Any person booked in the county has their immigration status checked. If they are illegal, they are gone. Although the feds have been causing problems with the program.

Funny, since the 287g program is a federal program to begin with haha

I still have to somewhat agree with the thread topic, CBS evening news used to be the best in the network news business, when Chronkite and others were running the show. Now its almost as bad as Fox news, as a prevayer of fine rubbish. I stopped listening to the CBS evening news years ago.

Why complain when you go to a dumpster and then are crazy enough to expect to get a gourmet meal? CBS may have been a place to go two decades ago, and can become a place to go in future, but for the foreseeable future its shit.

I like the pole. "Does Illegal Immigration Lead to More Crime?" and its 79% saying yes.

seems at odds with the article..

Polls are the worst thing to happen to the news since 24 hour coverage. Argumentum ad popolum at its finest......

CBS has the same sickness that most other news outlets have right now. They are competing with the blogisphere. Name one news source in the US that has retained its reputation in the last 10 years. Even the wall street journal editorials are downright trash these days... At least the WSJ news sections have been essentially decent....

The paradigm has shifted and the old school organizations are scrambling to remain relevant..

You are right. Just goes to show you how many morons there are in America.

With an increase in population, there is NO WAY that crime decreases or even stays the same. The number should have been 100% yes, just based on the Theory of Large Numbers.

By default, them being here is a crime. Therefore, ILLEGAL immigration raises crime.

A form of picture ID, state ID, drivers license, etc.
Which will change little, but it will make the fake id creators a lot of money !
