CBC said:
RCMP officers stood guard outside a high school in Red Deer, Alta., Tuesday morning as more than 40 demonstrators marched outside the grounds as part of an anti-immigration protest.

The demonstration was staged after a fight last week involving students from Syria who critics say were unfairly spared punishment by school officials.

Stephen Garvey, a member of the anti-immigration group, the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam, said the protest is intended to raise awareness about the need to protect "Canadian culture" in Canadian schools. Garvey is also leader of the National Advancement Party of Canada, a federally registered political party.

"Who we are as a people, as a country, as a heritage, it's all getting pushed aside and if we don't stand up for us as a people, as our country, we're going to lose it," Garvey said. "We welcome people coming to our country, but they have to integrate into our society. It's not about accommodating their values.

It's about standing up for Canadians, our freedoms, our civil rights and our liberties. And some of these cultures that are coming are incompatible with our own."

Grade 11 student Thomas Gower said the protests are unnecessary and have made students feel unsafe.

He stood nearby holding a sign which read, "No more hate, No more fear, Refugees are welcome here."

"There was never really a big issue until this incident. Everybody kept to themselves really," said Gower. "The spreading of misinformation leads to things like this. You shouldn't have to worry about things like this when we're supposed to be a welcoming and accepting school.

"Let's be a little bit more welcoming, why don't we?"

I'm not saying that I suspect there was at least one poster here at this H.S., but I wouldn't be surprised if some Canadian someone wasn't online because he was busy here.

The main takeaway from this is that the conservative group staging this protest based it entirely on several false factual premises. They undoubtedly knew they were false when they staged the protest. Welcome to our world Canucks. Where the alt right has no respect for facts whatsoever. A movement packed to the brims with disgraceful liars. It's the most defining characteristic of this emerging alt-right. Just look at who they elected here in the US.

"Let's be a little bit more welcoming, why don't we?"

That message does not work because you're dealing with people who see a Muslim and instead see Manchester.
The very nature of violence is it breeds vengeance. The more people fear the less they care to distinguish the "others".

The linked article says the protest was based on a myth, but there is no information in the article that provides details. The school official says there will be a discussion about the matter, but I don't see from the article any way to know what actually happened. Did the perps get regular punishment based on what they did? If so, much ado about nothing. If not, why not? Maybe there are other articles that provide more information, but this one just seems to say "the school officials say everything is normal, trust us".

There is this crazy thing that you can do with the internet. you can often look up those articles yourself. For example, I found this bit of info on the interwebs:

"All the students involved in the fight — four Syrians and four Canadians — have been suspended for one week, the principal said.

“From that video a post was put on Facebook and was sent around stating that the Syrians are allowed to go around whipping Canadians and that is because of their religious beliefs,” Lower said in an interview.

“That is the genesis behind this outrage. And that is simply not the case.”

The article also notes:

"RCMP Const. Derek Turner said the dispute was nothing more than a typical school fight that started with a Syrian and a Canadian student getting into a verbal dispute at a skateboard park off campus.

Other students became involved over a number of days. That resulted in two fights, one of which was captured on the video posted online.

“It just happened to turn into this other thing just because of the social media postings and the comments. That is why the protest and that is why the presence there for us (Tuesday),” Turner said.

RCMP are considering whether to lay municipal bylaw charges or to turn to restorative justice for those involved."

Here's the big protest and most of the dozen or so folks there don't actually have any connection to the school (i.e. not parents or relatives)

4 on 4 is fair fight as long as no weapons were involved. Week suspension all around is reasonable. If it was 4 Canadians on another 4 Canadians this would not even be a news story.

I was going strictly off the linked article, as I stated in my post. I wasn't going to go searching to find other articles for more information. Without knowing all the details about who did what to whom, it seems like the protest are misguided as all the participants got the same punishment.

It definitely seems like there is more simmering under the surface in that community, there will be more problems down the line.

Info is sketchy at best but there appears to have been multiple fights. The first one apparently involved several Syrians ganging up and attacking a student using belts which really pissed off a lot of people as no one was apparently punished for the initial incident. Later incidents apparently resulted in punishments though. Here's a really horrible video...but you can get the gist of what happened in one of these fights (not sure if it was the first one or not).

Congratulations, you linked right back to the same lies that the school and police have pointed out are a pile of lies.
