CB Radio or VHF, which is better?

Just wondering which is better for off-roading? Any suggestions, or stories to share?

CB, its cheap, easily availabe and you don't have to worry about getting everyone licenced. if your way out in the boondocks bring whatever level equipment you need to get a lifeflight.

Try marine band radios.

None of the seemingly never-ending problem of skip that CBs have.

I was thinking CB to test the water... some good CB's out there now a days, but the old school ones look sweet! Maybe get a VHF (marine radio) if I find the CB not too used anymore.

That's illegal and unlike unlicensed GMRS use using marine handhelds will get attention - the wrong kind.

I don't know about offroading, but I like to turn on the CB when traffic backs up. You can find out where the trouble is. Truckers have also kept me from falling asleep on 14 hour drives. I bought this last month.

CB radio is 11 meters - legal range is 26.965 through 27.405 MHz in 10kHz/channel increments. 4W CW power AM and 12W PEP power SSB.

hmm.... that's in the upper range of HF then (using the definition of 3-30 Mhz for HF).

Wow. SSB... why do CB radios need SSB?

Sorry if I sound like I just came out from under some rock, these radio devices are not allowed where I live, due to potential interference with police and security forces bands.

SSB has no carrier so you generally get clearer reception on crowded bands. Receivers can have higher sensitivity and offbeat tones from carrier hetrodyning is eliminated.
