At my place of work we weigh trucks in and out of our quarry. The truck drivers use cb radio to communicate with the girl in the scale house. Quite often upon transmission of the radios her pc will lock or lose communication with the modem. Does any one know of this or can direct me to a place where iI can research problem ? This has been going on for over a year and no one seems to be able to figure it out.:(

Can't give you an answer, but I have seen the same thing (except it's with ham radio). One of my computers just locks up when it's near (1 foot) an operating transmitter. The other computer used in that room does not. So the solution might be to get her another computer. Can you try somebody else's just to see?

Other things to look at are good grounds. The third prong on the AC plug is your only ground on a computer. That is often not a very effective RF ground. Sometimes, the plug isn't wired right and it's not a ground at all. Can you try a different plug for the computer? Try routing all the computer cables (KB, monitor, etc etc) as close to each other as possible. Just moving them around might help. The phone line into the modem could also be picking up RF and causing trouble.

Try a google search on RFI. Could take a while to wade through the results, but there might be a solution.

Good Luck.

Put signs up that read "TURN OFF LINEAR AMPLIFIERS BEFORE ENTERING WEIGH AREA, FCC FIELD DIVISION ENFORCED!"

Cheers!

I thought that it was against the law to use CB radio for commercial business.

It very well might be. But they really don't force the CB laws very much at least in my area. I got a CB Base station that I use. I'm using a big linear amplifier with the base station. On a good day I can talk to people near 25 miles away. I even live in a area with a big hills and vallys.

That's pretty easy. Report it to the FCC. Such interference is not permitted, and they will usually do something about it. Ham radio is another matter - they are usually responsible people and will quickly correct the problem, but CB users are rather an undisciplined lot to say the least.

The best and quickest solution is to get rid of the CB radio used by the girl in the scale house, and advise all drivers to use their cell phones - post the phone number on a big sign on the approach to the quarry area.

Actually, dollars to donuts, it is HER radio that is causing the RFI problem since her transmitter is in the same room. You might try moving her antenna.
