Cayman Islands Destroyed

I just got an email from my dad stating that the Cayman Islands have been demolished by Hurricane Ivan. Our house, as well as our three favorite dive sites, and not just the oceanic portion, are gone. Here's a list of some other damage:
-Roof on the Beachcomber condo 100% gone
-New Meridian totally intact and dry on 1st floor, pool intact, some eaves trough and wall damage on 5th and 6th floor
-Up to 50 ft boats still tied to portions of a dock scattered along roads
-Beach Club Colony totally destroyed
-Casa Carib and Islands Club 2nd floor blown out (there are 3 floors here so not sure what this means)
-Cayman Club looks like it has been destroyed
-She says no deaths reported on the island
-90% of peoples homes are damaged
-Power outage predicted at 2 weeks
-2 British war ships docked near the island
-Parts of the island that were "there" no longer "there" i.e sunset house,
southsound demolished, turtlefarm gone, lost of west bay destroyed-sorry
no specifics
-Roads undriveable
And to think that I just got back from there in July... keep the Caymanians in your thoughts, it's going to be a rough couple of months trying to get the island back on its feet.

Got some pictures of the aftermath:

Wait - your parents live in the Cayman Islands, or do they have (had) a vacation home there , or what?

🙁

Ivan was a killer, I think around 150mph winds when it hit you guys. I live in Central Florida, we just got hit by those two others, while there was some damage, it wasn't nearly as devestating in-land as it was on the coasts. I can't imagine the damage to an island, as the hurricane really doesn't lose much of its strength passing over.

Goodluck to your father, the Caymanians, the Jamaicans, and whoever Ivan is going to hit on the Gulf Coast on getting everything fixed.

Sad to say, when I think of Cayman islands I think of drug money laundering and US companies setting up fake corporations to not pay their US taxes.

They moved down there about 2 years ago, after my dad retired.

oo, and the panhandle is supposed to get it worse because it is suppose to strengthen as it approaches the U.S.

uhoh.

I vacationed in the Caymans a few years back. Beautiful islands. I've actually been to some of the places you mentioned and I'm saddened to hear of all that destruction. Hope that they can come back strong.

turtlefarm gone

🙁 I remember going there a few times when i was younger.... I wonder how hell faired....

Hell is about .5 miles north of the turtle farm...not too well. The igneous rocks are a bit wet, but the town (Post office and church especially) got wiped out.

🙁

Sorry to hear that...but it's good to hear of no deaths.

I just got back from San Juan yesterday...we lucked out as Ivan took the turn south to avoid PR. Unfortunately, he appears to be headed straight for my family and friends in New Orleans. :|
