OK ok ok ok.. I'm the type when I hear good stuff I want whatever is hot. I want a V5 but only if I can get it for that magical $140 mark that some people are getting it at. Where?

I am dying to try HSR and FINALLY have a card that (hopefully) will run in full bore 4x AGP. I could never get the geforce to run with all of its touted features turned on.. 4x agp didnt work reliably, fast writes didnt either.. ARGH!! Yes I have newest bios (individually tried every bios version also none work.. running beta right now) and also always have newest drivers...

My system as follows-
ASUS A7V bios 1005
Athlon 700@800 socket a
256mb crucial cas2 mem
Geforce MX
SBLive
13gb maxtor ATA66
lovely DVD/CDRW/CD/CDR all in one drive (4xwrite,4xrewrite,32x CD read)
I think thats all that might matter..

Wow, you really are a benchmark man if you're jumping onto the V5 wagon because of beta HSR!

But anyhoo, welcome to the darkside.

Hotdeals thread on V5

Somebody was selling retail V5 in the For Sale/Trade forum for like $170 or so i think... or you could buy the OEM ones from Quino (where i got mine) for about $160shipped (also in the FS/FT forum).

rampage, I'm glad you're finally starting to see the light....BUT

I must caution you. The 5500 isn't a great "benchmarking" card.

I will gladly tell you all the nifty little "secrets" i've found in the drivers, but don't think your 3dMarks are going to go up due to HSR.

HSR is still experimental

The reason 3dfx didn't put it into the 3dfx Tools in the beta drivers is because it was meant ONLY for Tribes2 developers. Don't think you're going to get outstanding benchmarks out of the box.

Outstanding gameplay? Yep. Outstanding benchmarks? Not really.

Also, 4xAGP is both worthless and unsupported by the 5500. You can do 2xAGP with a setting "AGP FIFO". 4x is a no-go.

are 3 great sites. The NT Compatible one has a 3dfx FAQ

as for picking it up cheap, go here:

buy.com

I might be getting one myself. It's ~$176 at buy.com, and if you're a *cough* new customer, there's a $30 off coupon floating around.

Wow thanks moralpanic, robotech and ahirman.. to moralpanic and robo i never tried to step on your toes before when arguing in here. Just trying to defend what I though was the best card out.. but you won and I'm convinced. I may be a annoying seemingly unreachable forum snake but I'm not. I just argue until I either lose, or find the other party completely blind to the truth.
In a way I say thanks for putting me in my place.. honestly I somehow miss my old voodoo 1 and 2. Maybe its the memories of 16bit 256x256 texture sized horror :) actually it was not bad at all.. I miss the stability and image quality of the 3dfx cards.

I got my card for $145.95..thats it. FREE SHIPPING. That is a killer deal.. I would suggest everyone give this card a try, I havent gotten mine yet but one thing about the card that I think everyone would agree on, that this card is the most underrated video card in recent memory.
I was a strong advocate of 3dfx before the v5 and at the first release but decided to try a geforce instead. I found a much more advanced card than my v2 (I was not impressed with tnts), so of course I fell for it. The poor v5 reviews discouraged me enough to go nvidia. But I did believe in FSAA over TnL back in the day myself.. seeing TnL so far not giving gameplay much of any advantage.

"I may be a annoying seemingly unreachable forum snake but I'm not. "

hahaha...okay man, I believe you! :)

".. seeing TnL so far not giving gameplay much of any advantage. "

indeed. Not much help at all.

It's not "hardware T&L" that is flawed, just that nvidia's present implementation of HW T&L is obviously pretty weak, as far as developers and Microsoft (And nvidia themselves) are concerned.
