Okay well seeing how most of the CompUSA stores are going out of business i noticed that they have a 74gb WD raptor that is 40% off and im thinking about buying it but i dont want to waste my money if it wont have any performance increase. Will i see a difference between my WD Caviar 80gb serial ata drive and the WD raptor?

It depends on what you are doing, but overall the perfomance gains won't be very noticable.

A lot depends on the rest of your system, games/apps will load faster.

We were surprised how much faster HL2 loaded when we made the switch. It was like night and day. We're usually one of the first to spawn in online games as well.

Just don't expect to see an amazing performance increase.

Typing "raptor" in the search box generated two pages of search results. ;)

At 40% off, you're damn right you should go out and buy that 74GB Raptor. You would be crazy not to and you will see a performance gain.

You will see a good bump in speed going from those 80GB caviers to a raptor.

btw whcih CompUSA is this? The near my work is going out of business but I couldnt find any drives for sale.

I'd pick up a 2nd Raptor for 40% off.

You will definitely see a boost. I just built a new PC on Friday with 2x 7200.10 500GB's in it and can already tell that map changes in CS:Source/CS1.6 are slightly slower on my new pc (C2D E6600, 2GB, 8800GTS 7200.10's) than my old one (P4 Northwood 3.2, 2GB, 6800GS, first gen Raptor 36.7GB). The difference is slight, maybe 5-10% in load times.

I'm actually selling my first gen Raptor locally because even though the speed increase is nice, 36.7GB isn't enough for OS, applications and games. I'm going to buy another Raptor or SSD based drive when prices come down a bit.

FYI: They had 2 raptor 74gb in stock at Encinitas (San Diego) store, but only 15% off of $179.

Just like everything else in that store, after the markdowns they're still more expensive than what you can find online.
