Caviar Black Squeal

The first 10 seconds of downloading a file or running "chkdsk" it emits a continuous high pitched squeal. Is this normal among Caviar Black's? chkdsk says there are no errors. It's like a whistle.

Heya,

No HDD should squeal. Not even super fast spindle ones squeal like that. It may report no errors on the disk itself, but you may have some issues with a component of the drive or perhaps something is touching it?

Very best,

Current drive technology dictates that some noise will occur during drive operation. The type of noise and the volume of the noise can change depending on the current function that the drive is involved in. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble and which are simply normal drive sounds.

Normal drive sounds include:
Whining noise during drive spin-up

Occasional clicks during data access

Hard clicks during a head park operation (shutdown or sleep mode)
Abnormal drive sounds include:
High-pitched whining sound

Vibration sounds due to either vibration in the mounting hardware or in rare cases, a drive failure

Clicking or clunking sounds that occur repeatedly

Grinding sounds

According to WD, it's normal when it spins up. I supposed when downloading the paltter spins faster which makes the nosie? So you think it's defective?

Okay I'm gonna cry. I spoke to WD and th lady said it wan't normal and it was probably a mechanical defect. I changed the SATA cable and there's no difference. Looks like it's RMA time for me! 🙁

So I exchanged my Caviar Black and it still has a whine. Whatever, next upgrade will be deciated to my hard drive. An Intel x-25M (If they come signifacntly come down in price) as my boot, and the new 7200.12 Seagate 500GB single platter for storage when they come out. My 1TB Caviar Black will live the rest of its life as an external drive.
