Is this the new big thing? Is everyone just setting their exposed hdd's on their desk??

If you're looking for a single external drive that's on all (or most) of the time, I'd actually prefer a real external drive or enclosure.

Drive docks shine when you need to juggle multiple hard drives for short periods of time. It's easier and cheaper to pop in drives as you need as opposed to buying multiple enclosures or using one enclosure for multiple drives.

Personally, I do a lot of work with HD digital video. I transfer the original video, working project files, and the finished video on external drives (as well as backups of these on a separate drive). I label these and store them in a safe place. I may need to go back and get data off these 2-3 times a year. I tried using D/L DVDRs for a couple weeks and said forget that.

For my above purpose, drive docks are the best thing since sliced bread.

As I upgrade my internal hard drives with larger ones I use the smaller drives like tape backup to backup my most critical data so I love these things. I must have 7 hard drives of various sizes (160gb-200gb, 320gb) backing up pictures, documents, home videos, etc.

** MOST IMPORTANT ** I have people bring me thier corrupt PC with unbootable hard drive that they just want to get the data off. Its real nice to just pop in their drive, scan for viruses, etc and pull off their data then let them re-image the drive if its still good. Much better than having to break open an external drive case or mount it inside your pc yada yada yada.

These external docks are great if you don't mind your drives baking. Hard drives can get very hot when left out without any cooling. Then you turn your computer off and forget to power off the dock, you will find the next morning that your hard drive is all toasty from baking there all night.

I prefer these things. They have a fan inside that keeps the drive cool and it's actually pretty quiet. It works externally too, you just need a SATA-to-eSATA cable.

Zomg, thanks for the link. I was actually looking for a better way to store hard drives. Best I could find was this but I think I like the rubber ones better.

I just hang on to those plastic holders that Seagate and Samsung HDDs come in. Free with purchase! 😀

Need to store hard drives? Most any city has one (or more) well established computer business - usually the one that has tricked the cities businesses into thinking they are the only place in town who cares for them. Anyway, if you are nice, and interesting, you could likely snag a few of the rugged styrofoam bulk hard drive shipping units. I have a handful of these things that I snagged from their dumpster (I am not nice, nor interesting, for the most part). I am sure they would have some sitting around for the asking. Mine hold 20 drives each. They stack, they are really durable, and they are all full. They were a find at the time, now I need more.
