I have had really bad allergies and sinuses my whole life, and have tried about everything to keep them under control...

One night about 3 weeks ago I was extremely tired and was laying in bed waiting to pass out when I started getting these fluttering feelings in my chest. It was weird, and I thought it was my lungs because I had just come off of a cold. Eventually I fell asleep by lying on my back. But, I kept getting them at weird times, just a few here and there, usually when I was tired, but then I was getting them while doing other things when I was active. It was like a short twinge and then was gone, usually in small little bursts.

Then I thought after about a week that it might be my heart and I started taking my pulse, sure enough whenever I felt it my pulse would stop, nothing at all and then restart. So of course that scared the crap out of me. I have had heart palpitations before from some of the things I have used (fat burners etc), but not this bad and now they were starting to get painful. And, I wasn't taking anything that could cause it, or so I thought...

So I got really scared because they got even worse and extremely painful, but still only for like 5 minutes out of the day. I was worried because I have put a lot of supplements and things in my body over the years, and I eat a lot and have recently gained a lot of weight on purpose. So my thinking was oh crap, my heart can't handle my training and diet regimen anymore, maybe my cholesterol is through the roof or something. But, I remember that couldn't be right because I recently had blood tests done by a sports lab and everything was fine. So I called my doctor (who I love because he knows his ****** and I can talk to him about anything) and I told him what was happening, looking in my files he asked me if I was taking the pseudoephedrine (generic version of Sudafed) everyday for my allergies. And, I had been because since the summer they had gotten really bad so I was taking them on top of my flonaze and antihestimine everyday for about 3 months. If I stopped taking them my sinuses got really bad and I got headaches, so I kept taking them (it doesn't sound as stupid because they are meant to be taken everyday along with the antihistimine, because together they are what you would find in a daily Clariten or Alegra-D, all of which I had prescribed but didn't like the price of). Anyway he told me that was probably the problem and I should stop taking them immediately. Later I did some research online and yup, a study confirmed there is a great risk of stroke. Now I am as healthy as an ox, no heart conditions what so ever, but the doctor told me I was getting very close to having major failure. It has been 3 weeks now and those twinges and pain have all gone away and my doctor says everything is fine now. I have continued my training throuhg it all and no problems since I have stopped taking it, and now I just rely on my flonaze.

So I just thought that you might want to be aware of this, as it is a very popular medication. That, and I know a lot about nutrition and supplements and things along those lines like ephedra, but never would I have thought my simple decongestant was causing it.

You guys are just now finding this out?

Hey, I grew up in a county in Mississippi where about 25% of the GDP was from this stuff. A good way to get the law knocking on your door is to buy a dozen boxes of it at Wal-Mart (one has not been able to buy more than X amount for sometime).

Heh, one time when I was a kid, a moron put the police to the chase and drank a bottle of Red Devil Lye (but did not bother to throw the container out the window) to cover his tracks when he was going to get pulled over at an interstate exit near my hometown. He lived, but he did not look human anymore and all his food/water came from a tube.

Ahh, if only I had known ATOT back then, he would have been a great nomination for the darwin awards.

But, that being said, its a shame. Pseudoephedrine > * when one has a head cold. I love it..... in a non addicted way of course.

Oh crap. I was just taking Sudafed for a cold a few days ago and got these exact problems. I've since stopped, but seriously, my stomach and chest hurt so bad. I did not like that feeling at all.

yeah the stuff seems to be giving a lot of reactions.. i nearly went to ER myself. I think they should have dont more testing.. My health insurance RN provider (i called in for advise) said i should get off the meds right away and then told me to get a 'tussin' based cough syrup. So that helped.. and then next day at teh doctor they changed my meds.

i work at a pharmancy, whenever a patient come asking the pharmacist for a recommendation for allegies, the first question the pharmacist ask is if the patient is taking anything heart medication.

sudafed is not recommended to anyone with any heart problems. They usually recommend otc claritin.

I'd be rushing to the doctor to get a full lab if I were you. A "great risk of stroke" doesn't sound right given how common these drugs are; in fact, a quick Google search quickly shows this not to be the case. If you have proof to the contrary, please let us know.

That said, depending on what tests the sports lab ran on you, I'd be getting more.

I had a full lab run, and it was because I was taking it so consistantly. Of course there is nothing I can do as the packaging even reads do not take over a period of time. Personally I am glad it was only the sudafed and not my lifestyle.

That's really interesting to hear I am not the only one with this type of reaction on here.

I sometimes took my pulse when I was using meth (I'm a careful drug user) and it would miss a beat every now and again, just as you described. I found that if I forced myself to calm down and lower my heart rate it would go away.

I've always been more of a diphenhydramine guy myself. I'm sure that's bad for you too.
